Massage
During a massage, a therapist warms your muscles and releases tension from your body. It is easy to feel at peace and surrender to the moment. This can be an excellent method for soothing tension, back pain, and neck and shoulder complaints. When deciding which style to try, keep in mind that each was designed for a different purpose. Two of the most common are Swedish and remedial.
— Swedish massage is wonderfully relaxing. It uses a reasonable amount of pressure, just enough so that the muscles respond. The therapist applies flowing, rhythmic movements, allowing both your body and mind to release stress and tension. You can let go and melt into the healing table.
The angels describe Swedish massage as like an aura dance. Practitioners work with your energy as much as they work with your physical body, so it’s important to have a happy, high-energy therapist. You don’t need someone sending anger or negativity into you.
— Remedial massage, such as deep-tissue massage, is usually what people ask for when they’re in pain. It is important to note that it may initially cause even more discomfort. Therapists use firm pressure and focus on isolating specific muscles rather than being concerned with general relaxation, as in a Swedish massage. They begin by warming the surrounding tissues, then follow their fingers to the site of your pain, concentrating on the muscle causing the problem. They target the trigger points that run through each muscle, allowing it to release. Given that they are massaging the specific area of pain, you can be very uncomfortable until your body lets go.
I (Robert) learned Swedish and remedial massage as part of my naturopathy degree, which gave me insight into both these therapies. As part of training, we had to complete quite a few hours of practical clinic work in which a supervisor monitored us as we worked on clients. Clients would come in and describe their complaint, then we would get to it.
At this point, I’d been working on my spirituality for many years and had learned how to tune in to the body. I discovered that I could feel when clients’ muscles released their tension, which was usually after 15 to 20 minutes of work. Unfortunately, I was expected to keep massaging for the remainder of the hour-long appointment, and as I continued, I could feel the areas under my fingers getting irritated again. By the end of the session, those poor muscles were tense again. I conveyed this feeling to my supervisors, but they didn’t heed my warnings.
It is easy to cause yourself more harm if you ignore the signals given by your body. An hour-long massage can be a luxurious treat, but only when the work is balanced. We feel that the two styles work best together—remedial massage until the muscle releases, then gentle, rhythmic Swedish strokes through the rest of the body.
This is why it is important to research your massage practitioner first and ask if he or she works on an intuitive level.
